Boss Fight - A Symbiotic Relationship

On August 2023, Clinton Jones, a Director and a 3D/VFX Artist who is also named Pwnisher on Youtube, organized a boss fight 3D community challenge.

This is my submission which is highly inspired by two games called Spider-Man: Web of Shadows and the upcoming Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. The boss' model originally came from my previous project called "Your Virtual Assistant" with texture changes to resemble her appearance to She-Venom. The Spider-Man model was initiated before the challenge announcement and was finished in the first week of August 2023.

The biggest challenge here was to achieve the right feel of the web and symbiote within a limited time. After a lot of research, I was able to come up with a specific type of curve mechanism which I can just duplicate as many times as I want to achieve dynamic movements. With Maya's sweep mesh tool, the modeling part of it made it easier after the animation process.

The majority of the time was spent in Autodesk Maya, environment models from Kitbash3D, and rendered by Arnold. Textures were mixtures of Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, and Substance Painter. Final editing, visual, and sound effects were done in Adobe After Effects.

A short breakdown video made for Instagram reel.

There are 3 types of template provided.

1. Close
2. Medium
3. Far

I used the medium version as the basis of my entire project.

This simple and dynamic mechanism was used on both webs and symbiotes. With multiple clusters and constraints on both ends, it can attach itself to any two vertices, whether both points are on the same model or even two different ones.

This is the rig for the web's hub or center that is stuck to the boss' mouth and chest during the video.
